Ontario Designation for Canada’s First Aboriginal “Culture Capital of Canada”

Algonquins of Pikwakanagan-Golden Lake

The Globe and Mail reported on Saturday, Feburuary 5, 2005 that the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan are the first aborigional communitiy designated under the Cultual Capitals of Canada Program. Golden lake is located just off Highway 60, 1 ½ hours south and east of Algonquin Park, and 1 ½ hours west and north of Ottawa.

The Pikwakanagan-Golden Lake was awarded the designation in the category for populations under 50,000.
The Algonquin Nation web site indicates, “There are 10 recognized Algonquin communities in the greater Algonquin Nation. Nine of these communities are situated in Quebec (although a number of these communities have traditional territory that extends into Ontario). The Algonquins of Golden Lake are the one community that is based in Ontario".

The Government of Canada announced on May 31, 2002 the creation of Cultural Capitals of Canada, a national program to recognize and support Canadian municipalities for special activities that harness the many benefits of arts and culture in community life.
