Who knew, Queen Victoria was responsible for Ottawa being designated Canada’s Capital. Queen Victoria (1819-1901) Queen Victoria officially chose Ottawa as Canada's capital in 1857. Nearly forty years later, a monument to Queen Victoria, intended as part of a lavish celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the sixtieth year of her reign, was proposed for the Hill.
