More Canada Day weekend events

Some of the most memorable Canada Day celebrations involve a trip to Ontario beaches where the cool fresh waters at will be waiting.  Canada Day traditions celebrate icons such as the canoebutter tarts (invented in Barrie Ontario), poutine and red and white flag face painting. Canada Day as we know it has only been celebrated since 1982, when it replaced Dominion Day, which was established by statute in 1879.  The first July 1 holiday to celebrate the "formation of the union of the British North America provinces" took place in 1868 one year after confederation.
