Port Hope Ontario-May North East of Toronto, Port Hope Ontario has 10 historical sites including churches, galleries, cemeteries, and perhaps most interesting is the Trinity College School Observatory and Boulden House. Boulden House, built in 1924, is now a junior school for Trinity College, and contains the school’s art studios. The Anne Currie Observatory, donated in 2003, has an automated dome with 360-degree rotation and a retractable shutter. It has a magnification of 750 times, and contains a global positioning system that automatically determines time, altitude, longitude and latitude. Book Port Hope hotels on-line Brockville Ontario and Thousand Islands-May North East of Toronto, The Brockville 1000 Islands area has more than 25 sites available for touring during the Doors Open Ontario weekend. This is perhaps the most diverse including wineries, bed and breakfasts and the Colonel’s Inn, antique boats and a National Park Historic Battle site, The Battle of the Windmill Battle of the Windmill National Historic Site. This site won the Brockville-Thousand Islands People’s Choice Award in 2005 and 2006. In 1838, a bloody battle took place here between an American Hunter (or Patriot) “lodge,” a group sympathetic to the 1837 Rebellions in Canada but unknown to the American government, and a combination of local militia and British forces, who defeated the invaders. Book Brockville area hotels on-line. Loyalist Parkway (Napanee area between Kingston and Belleville) May-31 North East of Toronto, the Loyalist Parkway has a handful of sites including apiaries, wineries, and libraries. One of the must stops along the parkway is the United Empire Loyalist Heritage Centre & Park. Fleeing the chaos that followed the American Revolution, Caspar and Barbara Hoover arrived in Adolphustown in 1784 and joined a refugee encampment at Hagerman’s Point. Their grandson, David W. Allison, MP, built this stately red-brick home in 1876–77. It has been a United Empire Loyalist museum since 1956. Book Belleville, Kingston hotels on-line. |
