Arnaud Maggs: Lost and Found

MacLaren Art Centre and Downtown Barrie

Sept 4th to October 31st, 2010

Lost and Found features recent works from two photographic series by award-winning Canadian artist Arnaud Maggs. Contamination, 2007,
is comprised of sixteen successive page spreads of a damaged ledger
dating to the 1905 Yukon Gold Rush discovered by Maggs in a flea
market. Its symmetrical ink stains and mould patterns across blank
pages evoke an unfulfilled destiny. Scrapbook, 2009, is a four-part work
of page spreads selected from unfinished scrapbooks begun by Maggs
in 1973, at the outset of his career as a fine artist but soon after set aside,
only to be re-encountered by Maggs thirty-six years later. www.maclarenart.com

Andrew Hunter: The Burden of Proof

MacLaren Art Centre
Barrie, Ontario

Sept 11th - Oct 31st, 2010
This narrative project by Waterloo artist, writer and curator Andrew T.
Hunter focuses on a fictional character, Andrew Herbert Hunter, who acts
as bridge between himself and historical Barrie figure Andrew Frederick
Hunter (1863-1940). A. F. Hunter was a leading Simcoe County historian,
archaeologist and publisher whose serious academic research and
writing is a counterpoint to the artist’s historical fictions. Rooted in local
history, folklore and story-telling and developed through a community
collaboration, The Burden of Proof attempts to demonstrate the existence
of an imaginary lake monster residing in Kempenfelt Bay.

A featured exhibition of Carnegie Days 2010

Ed Pien: Enchantment

Enchantment is an extension of Haunting: The “Drawing” of Ed Pien, curated by Ted Fullerton for the Campus Gallery, Georgian College, on view September 14 to October 10. www.maclarenart.com

Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak:
...bump in the night, Barrie

MacLaren Art Centre
Barrie, Ontario

September 3rd - 28th, 2010
…bump in the night, Barrie comprises a series of large format
photographs by renowned Canadian media artists Lisa Steele and
Kim Tomczak, created for Barrie and displayed in ten city bus transit
shelters. Each image portrays an anonymous student on the verge of
graduation entering a Barrie-area high school, overlaid with text culled
from student responses to a series of questions. Revealing the students’
dreams, goals, fears and memories, they reflect the personal and
collective narratives of this generation.
