Discovery Harbour Starburst icon representing membership level: Gold

Discovery Harbour

A naval and military past, Discovery Harbour traces its roots back to the original British naval and military base in Penetanguishene, built to safeguard access to Upper Canada after the War of 1812. “His Majesty’s Naval Establishment on Lake Huron”, (as it was first called) kept ships prepared to supply British posts to the northwest. By 1820, it was home to over 70 people, including sailors, officers, shipwrights, and soldiers. Five large ships, 15 smaller vessels, and numerous workshops and dwellings were built.

In 1828, a British garrison on Drummond Island was relocated to Penetanguishene. By 1834, Canada was defended exclusively by these forces. An impressive stone Officers’ Quarters was built in 1845. The military occupied the site until 1856.

Today, special events, program highlights, and terrific summer activities at the historic site await you this summer! Visitors can enjoy above and below deck tours of the replica of H.M.S. Tecumseth based on her 1815 log, and see her original 1815 hull remains in the spectacular new H.M.S. Tecumseth Centre, complete will all-new exhibits and displays.

Piratefest – Saturday July 30 – 10:00am to 5:00pm
In partnership with the Town of Penetanguishene and Urban 365 Slide, the day is a new family event planned to draw 5,000 people to the combined festivities. Shuttles will move visitors between the dock in Penetanguishene and Discovery Harbour.

Pumpkinferno at Haunted Harbour – Evenings: Thursday-Sunday October 1-30, 2016

But Beware.. Zombies and ghouls lurk in the all new “Terror Zone”… Enter if you dare! (Terror zone not recommended for young children)
The carved pumpkins you will see at Pumpkinferno are realistic, artificial pumpkins, whose forms have been shaped from molds of real pumpkins. The pumpkins have been designed and carved by a talented group of young artists from the Eastern Ontario region. Sainte Marie Among the Hurons Starburst icon representing membership level: Gold

Sainte Marie among the Hurons

Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, Ontario’s first European community, in the heart of Georgian Bay, and was the headquarters for the French Jesuit Mission to the Huron-Wendat people. In 1639, the Jesuits, along with French lay workers, began construction of a fenced community that included barracks, a church, workshops, residences, and a sheltered area for First Nations visitors.

By 1648, Sainte-Marie was a wilderness home to 66 French men, representing one-fifth of the entire population of New France. Sainte-Marie’s brief history ended in 1649, when members of the mission community were forced to abandon and burn their home of nearly 10 years.

After extensive archaeological and historical research, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is now recreated on its original site, where the mission’s compelling story is brought to life. Located near Midland in the beautiful Southern Georgian Bay area, this world-renowned reconstruction illustrates the interaction of the French and Huron-Wendat nations. Visitors get a unique opportunity to see the earliest Canadian pioneer life, through guided or self-guided visits, school group tours, interactive education programs, special events, and corporate functions. We are also very proud of the fact that we are now an ‘Ontario Signature Experience’.

End your time with us with a visit our Interpretive Museum. Have a delicious meal in our themed on-site Restaurant and shop for a lovely souvenir in the Museum Gift Shop.
