Discovery Harbour, Penetanguishene
Explore all that Discovery Harbour has to offer this summer with your family and friends. This picturesque historic site is situated on beautiful Penetanguishene Bay tracing its roots back to the original British naval and military base built to safeguard access to Upper Canada after the War of 1812.
Throughout the summer, visitors enjoy fun and interactive daily tours and on-site activities that reflect life and work at this 19th century outpost. It is the homeport of the magnificent replica ships, H.M.S. Tecumseth and H.M.S. Bee. You can board both of these historic vessels and test your skill at some of the daily ship activities. Learn what life was like as a sailor. Tour all of the historic buildings with friendly costumed staff and make sure to end your visit in the new H.M.S. Tecumseth Centre and see a real ship wreck for 1815.

Ghost Tours at Discovery Harbour – Wednesdays: 9:00pm to 10:30pm – July 13 to August 24
A spooky guided tour by candlelight featuring encounters with apparitions in the window and footsteps in the hallway. Tales of actual people associated with the Military and Naval Establishments will include that of the McGarraty brothers who died on the march from York in June of 1831 and the tale of Private James Drury who died New Year’s Eve 1836 on guard duty at Officers’ Quarters.
Piratefest – Saturday July 30 – 10:00am to 5:00pm
In partnership with the Town of Penetanguishene and Urban 365 Slide, the day is a new family event planned to draw 5,000 people to the combined festivities. Shuttles will move visitors between the dock in Penetanguishene and Discovery Harbour.
Pumpkinferno at Haunted Harbour – Evenings: Thursday-Sunday October 1-30, 2016
Experience the phenomenon of Pumpkinferno! Families can view amazing carved pumpkin displays set against the night-time backdrop of Discovery Harbour. Mazes and crafts provide fun for all ages! But Beware.. Zombies and ghouls lurk in the all new “Terror Zone”… Enter if you dare! (Terror zone not recommended for young children)
The carved pumpkins you will see at Pumpkinferno are realistic, artificial pumpkins, whose forms have been shaped from molds of real pumpkins. The pumpkins have been designed and carved by a talented group of young artists from the Eastern Ontario region. These designers and carvers were selected based on their penchant for design, whether in his/her field of study or as a personal hobby.
Getaway and Explore a 17th century historic site
Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, Midland
Seniors that have been coming to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons marvel at a world that existed over 370 years ago. This impressive reconstruction takes you back in time to a story of cultural contact, determination, drama, and survival. A colourful audio-visual presentation sets the stage for your journey. As you explore the historic site you’ll sense the challenges faced by those who founded and worked at this famous mission. Throughout the summer, active demonstrations by historically-costumed staff provide insight into 17th century European and First Nations culture, lifestyle, and technology.
During July and August, the historic site is pleased to offer fun and informative demonstrations and “hands-on” activities that share aspects of life in the 17th century. They include listening to music, playing First Nation games, learning about birch bark and fire-starting techniques, medicines from the time period and taking part in a clay workshops. Additional activities for children may feature quill pen writing and making corn husk figures.

A guided tour of Sainte-Marie that highlights French and First Nations stories and the people who lived here from 1639 to 1649. Individuals such as Master Carpenter Charles Boivin and Blacksmith Louis Gaubert will be highlighted. The evening concludes in the Longhouse with a traditional First Nations story which is a memorable experience and not to be missed.
FEAST Sainte-Marie – Saturday August 6 – 11:00am to 8:00pm
A celebration of the French, Huron-Wendat and regional food that influence much of the historical and regional cuisine of today. From Huron-Wendat corn bread to roasting bannock and learning the legend of “Three Sisters Soup”, this event is a taste of our heritage that also includes significant Francophone culinary references. Includes craft brewing and cider experiences throughout the historic site as well as entertainment.
