Lake Simcoe History
Lake Simcoe was the major transportation route for First Nations trading and European explorers heading north. The Nine Mile Portage was the focal point for trading and distribution of goods, as well as an early Military highway to and from Georgian Bay Lake Huron. Today Lake Simcoe it is a major recreation area known for fishing, boating, summer and winter sports and beautiful sunsets and vistas. See Barrie History for details on Nine Mile Portage.

Lake Simcoe, Ontario

Lake Simcoe is one of the closest resort destinations north of Toronto. See Lake Simcoe Map. Lake Simcoe is considered to be the fourth largest lake in the province and one of the worlds largest fresh water lakes that freezes completely in the winter. Lake Simcoe has been designated by many as the "Ice Fishing Capital" of Ontario. York Region and Durham Region border Lake Simcoe to the South and East. Barrie and Orillia are the two major cities in Simcoe County on the west and north east of Lake Simcoe. Renamed by John Graves Simcoe, from Lake Toronto and as the original fur traders name of Lac aux Claies, the "lake of weirs", after the many fishing weirs at the narrows in Orillia. Lake Simcoe today is still considered to be a significant part of Ontario cottage country and the gateway to the Trent-Severn Historic Waterway.

Many resorts in the Lake Simcoe area are directly impacted by the snow belt region of Ontario. Barrie and Orillia are the largest cities. The area is often dubbed the Barrie Snowbelt. Many winter recreational opportunities exist in the Barrie snowbelt area including, ice fishing, snowmobiling, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snow tubing, and several popular Ontario winter carnivals. Lake Simcoe is a great destination for family and romantic getaways during the winter months in Ontario.

The new Ministry of Natural Resources Fisheries Management Plan indicates that Lake Simcoe is the largest lakes in Zone 16 (Southern Ontario). Lake Simcoe is the largest lake within the zone and the lake trout, lake whitefish, smallmouth bass and yellow perch fishery is extremely popular.
