Lake Simcoe, Ontario

Lake Simcoe is one of the closest resort destinations north of Toronto. Lake Simcoe is considered to be the fourth largest lake in the province and one of the worlds largest fresh water lakes that freezes completely in the winter. Lake Simcoe has been designated by many as the "Ice Fishing Capital" of Ontario. York Region and Durham Region border Lake Simcoe to the South and East. Barrie and Orillia are the two major cities in Simcoe County on the west and north east of Lake Simcoe. Renamed by John Graves Simcoe, from Lake Toronto and as the original fur traders name of Lac aux Claies, the "lake of weirs", after the many fishing weirs at the narrows in Orillia. Lake Simcoe today is still considered to be a significant part of Ontario cottage country and the gateway to the Trent-Severn Historic Waterway.

Barrie Go Train To and from Toronto:
Like many Toronto residents, the thought of starting your weekend North of Toronto was avoided as many did not want to drive Highway 400 north. There is good news. Now with the Go Train going to Barrie, you can leave Friday afternoon from downtown Toronto, and return Monday morning. This will be of benefit to those who like to enjoy the Ontario winter outdoors, but don't like the drive. Arrive relaxed for your skiing, snow tubing, ice fishing or romantic weekend away.
