FAMILY LIFE: Deerhurst Drives Interest in Golf with "Kids Play Free" Plus Three Fun Summer Learning Programs

Huntsville, ON, May 9, 2008 – Summer is almost here. Concerned your kids will be spending another "I'm bored," vacation slouched in front of the TV or their computer screen?

No worries. Deerhurst Resort is here to help children (and their parents) get out there and make the most of the weather, their friends, family and time off with "12 by 12," twelve cool summer things to try before they turn 12.

And the Muskoka landmark is getting things off to an early start by introducing No. 1 on their tip list: "Kids Play Free," complimentary golf on their Deerhurst Lakeside course for kids aged 5 to 12, when accompanied by a full-paying adult.

"We're operating on the belief that the family that plays together stays together," says Deerhurst Director of Golf Simon Bevan. "Golf's a lifetime game. The earlier you learn, the longer you have to enjoy it."

To help kids pick up the essentials of the sport, Deerhurst's Golf Academy is also continuing to offer two different summer learning sessions to fit any schedule.

Their July and August five-day Junior Golf Camps keep kids from 7 to 12 busy every morning, covering all the fundamental skills in an attention-grabbing format. Parents who sign their kids up by June 15 also save $50, scoring a week of camp for only $199.

During July, Deerhurst's pros also run a Junior Clinic Series on Tuesday nights that ends with a fun competitive event out on the course. Groups are split by ages 5 to 9 and ages 10 to 16; the five-week series of lessons costs just $80.

In addition, children staying at the resort during July and August can join an hour-long, basic Golf Rules! lesson on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. Participation is $20 and content varies based on ages and group size, but essentials like good course etiquette are always reinforced.

"As parents and teachers know, you've got to make it fun for kids to learn, and you have to practice, otherwise they just won't stick with it," confirms Deerhurst's Director of Golf Instruction Dave Castellan.

"Golf is also about life lessons. At Deerhurst we teach the kids that it's important to be safe, play fair, know the score and make an effort. And that we should leave the golf course, or anywhere, in as good or better shape as we found it."

To book your Kids Play Free tee time or Junior summer sessions call (705) 789-6411 or 1-800-461-4393. For more academy information visit deerhurstresort.com/golf And stay tuned for more Deerhurst "12 by 12" kids fun, launching June 1, just in time for the summer vacation countdown.

HOW "KIDS PLAY FREE" WORKS: Anytime, all season long (May 3 to November 2, weather permitting), kids 5 to 12 play free at the Deerhurst Lakeside golf course, when accompanied by a full paying adult. One free round per child is valid for each full paying adult. The program is based on availability and restrictions may apply.

Deerhurst Resort is home to two 18-hole golf courses including the picturesque Deerhurst Lakeside and acclaimed Deerhurst Highlands, the forerunner of Muskoka's emergence as a top North American golf destination, created by Robert Cupp and famed Canadian course designer Thomas McBroom. Recently voted one of the world's "Top 100 Golf Resorts" by Condé Nast Traveler magazine, 800 acre Deerhurst also offers the most on-site activities of any resort in Eastern Canada, from paintball to a new beach Splash Zone and a YMCA Kids Program.
