The Canoe Leads the Way in Ontario’s
Historic Resort Destination on Georgian Bay

Midland / Georgian Bay, Ontario – July 2006 – Ontario’s Historical Resort Destination is celebrating the Canoe in Canada and Ontario’s first Mass held during Samuel de Champlain’s visit to Huronia in 1615.

Ontario’s First Jesuit Mass
The Canoe Leads the Way in Ontario's Historic Resort Destination on Georgian BayOn August 11, 2006 a special mass in La Fontaine will celebrate the first mass in Ontario that took place at a location near Georgian Bay in August of 1615. The canoe was the major form of transportation for the Europeans, combining portaging between lakes. The following excerpt from HIGHLIGHTS OF HURONIA, A Calendar of events 1615-1650. “Father Joseph LeCaron, a Recollet priest, arrived in Huronia (by canoe and portage) at the end of July 1615 and settled at a place called Carhagouha. It is possible that he was the first white man to set eyes on Lake Huron, although some think that this honour fell to Étienne Brûlé. Champlain followed LeCaron into Huronia a few days later and joined him a Carhagougha on August 4 th. LeCaron, according to Champlain’s diary, celebrated Mass for him, Brûlé, and other Frenchmen on August 12, 1615. This would have been the first Mass said in Ontario.” To commemorate this event, the Jesuits celebrate Mass at Carhagougha each year on a date on or near the anniversary. Join us this year at Carhagougha in La Fontaine parish on Friday August 11 at 4pm. For directions, please call (705) 526-3788. Visitors may also want to visit Canada’s famous Martyrs’ Shrine in nearby Midland.

Daily highlights include a new interactive traveling exhibit from the Canadian Canoe Museum, lively portage and historic encampments, birch bark canoe building and paddle carving, a traditional corn boil and bannock tasting. Canoe-inspired Children’s activities will include 17th century native games, paddle painting, a canoe-inspired puppet show, candle making, and crafting clay okies, a First Nations good luck charm. Various musical entertainers will perform throughout the 16 day event. For those who want to paddle their own canoes, Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre , located next door to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, offers one hour guided canoe tours. Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was the 17th century headquarters for the French Jesuit mission to the Huron. A nationally significant historic site, Sainte-Marie now stands recreated on its original location, 1.5 hours northwest of Toronto, on Georgian Bay, Lake Huron. Costumed staff along with 25 reconstructed buildings, including Ontario’s first hospital, bring to life the compelling story of the Huron Nation and Ontario’s first European settlement. For more information on daily Paddlefest activities, call (705) 526-7838 or visit the Sainte-Marie web-site.
