Delawana Inn Spa and Conference Resort Supports World Wetland Day
--Donates to the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre.

Honey Harbour, Ontario, Canada ………….January, 27, 2008. Ontario’s Delawana Inn is one of the largest resort destinations on Georgian Bay and for more than 111 years has relied on the crystal clear waters to sustain the resort business and guest satisfaction. In addition to the traditional water sports, Delawana attracts boaters, fishing tournaments and provides fun water based activities for families and children. Clean beaches that are safe for swimming and water sports are critical factors in bringing guests back year after year. Delawana has made a commitment to the World Wetlands Day by donating $5.00 from each reservation made during the month of February. These funds will help the Wye Marsh spread the word to better understand the role wetlands play in keeping Georgian Bay healthy.

Delawana has several fresh water beaches on-site and around Royal Island for swimming, waterskiing, children’s play areas, canoeing & kayaking and personal watercraft & boat docking.

Don adds, “Our perception about the environment has changed for the better over the past 10 years. We take extra care in protecting our beaches and shorelines”.

Delawana also engages their guests with outdoor nature programs including
water based environmental education about wetlands, flora & fauna and healthy eco-aquatic systems in the Georgian Bay area. Both children and adults can participate with the on-site naturalists from the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre.

The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre has one of Georgian Bay’s most significant wetlands and will be holding educational seminars on World Wetlands Day February 2, 2008.
Wetland Information to be discussed includes:

Water availability: If water is extracted more rapidly than it is naturally replenished, wetland ecosystems will, in extreme cases, collapse, with a complete loss of ecosystem services. The effect of such extreme cases is costly in terms of human health, erosion, and poor water quality for drinking and other purposes.

Wetland food: Adequate, good quality food is a prerequisite for healthy people, and wetlands are key contributors to the food supply of fresh water fish and the recreational tourism industry in the Georgian Bay area.

Clean water: Inland wetlands (rivers, lakes, ponds, marshes, etc.) perform a vital function in filtering and purifying freshwater, rendering it 'clean' for possible human consumption.
