| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wye Marsh Purple Loosestrife Control A Success!Four years of purple loosestrife control is a success! The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is pleased to announce that four years of applied control methods within our Preston Cell management area has proven to have a positive effect on decreasing the presence of purple loosestrife plants. When Wye Marsh staff and volunteers first began control efforts it was a daunting task, facing a sea of purple plants! Our preferred methods include the manual cutting of purple loosestrife flower spikes to decrease the production of seeds and biological control with the presence of Galerucella beetles. The difference at the Wye Marsh is quite noticeable. 4 years ago, the first kilometer along the Preston Cell berm was quite dense and now the purple loosestrife presence is considerably lower. With 3-4 years of control at a site infested with this invasive exotic
plant, a positive difference will likely be noted. The degree of change
will depend on the site location, ecological variables, options available
to management for control type and frequency, and the condition of the
initial invasion. For more information, please contact Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre at (705)-526-7809, ext.220, or email stewardship@wyemarsh.com. The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is a non-profit facility dedicated to environmental awareness. - 30 - |
