Discover the “Soo” and the Great Northern Algoma Region—You will be Stirred---and Shaken Gently

Rose J. Fingarson

Begin your journey in “naturally giftedSault Ste. Marie, located on the shores of St. Mary’s River, originally named “Bawating” meaning “shallow water rushing over stones” in Ojibwa (the native language).

The Soo is a city rich in natural attractions and cultural heritage.

Discover local, national and international artists at the Art Gallery of Algoma, while the Sault Ste. Marie Museum, The Ermatinger House, Clergue Heritage Site and The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre fill you with insight into the area's culture and history.

Agawa Canyon Rail Tour

Algoma Central Railway with its Agawa Canyon Rail Tour offer passengers a once in a lifetime experience and one of the best ways to see the Ontario wilderness from the comfort of a railway car. You’ll travel deep into the mixed forests of the Canadian Shield, cross the 2000 meter trestle bridge over the Montreal River and into the boreal forest of the Great Clay Belt, a combination of coniferous forests and great inland lakes. Once in the Canyon, disembark and climb high up the canyon to view Bridal Veil Falls.

Eagles’ Earth

Hop aboard Algoma Central's “milk train” and travel to Northern Ontario’s newest attraction – Eagles’ Earth. Set to open in July 2006, Eagles’ Earth is located 45 minutes west of Hearst and 20 minutes west of Constance Lake First Nation – accessible just off Highway 11 on the shores of Shekak River. Set on 102-hectares of First Nation's land you will uncover a truly exceptional Aboriginal cultural exchange. Defining Eagles’ Earth is the 11,000 square foot Eagle Feather building, acting as a “bridge” for visitors between life today and life 7,000 years ago prior to any European contact. The building features multi-media presentations, a 40-seat restaurant, convenience store, distinctive arts and craft store, workshop rooms and reception area.

Introduce, immerse, and discover first hand the ways of the Cree and Ojibwa nations through canoe, fishing or archaeological expeditions, demonstrations of the language, legends, history and heritage set along the banks of the Shekak River.

Overnight In a Replica Tepee

Spend a night in a replica tepee, complete with a bona fide wood-burning fire pit to give you the ambiance of tepee living. Triangular and Square cabins are also available along with 20 full serviced RV sites.

Polar Bear Habitat and the Polar Bear Express

Located 3-1/2 hours east along Highway 11 from Eagles’ Earth is the town of Cochrane. Here you can encounter the mighty polar bear up close and personal at The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat and Heritage Village. The unique wading pool allows adults and children to “swim with the bears.“ Take a walk back in time as the Heritage Village showcases life in the area in the 1900’s complete with “townspeople” working in period costume on authentic paraphernalia.

Arctic Watershed

While in Cochrane, climb aboard the Polar Bear Express and travel along the Arctic Watershed past historical highways of the once busy fur trade, all the way to the Arctic’s edge in Moosonee. Once there, cruise along aboard the M.V. Polar Princess to Moose Factory at the mouth of James Bay.

You’ll quickly discover, without doubt that this region is filled with more than simply awe-inspiring scenery, it is the gateway to a simpler time without e-mail, or cell phones; a portal to the past.

Northern Ontario - the people, the land, and the history - will stir you.

Publishers Note: Many southern Ontario residents believe northern Ontario starts at Barrie, however for those who may have had the opportunity to travel further north know that to experience the “true Ontario north”, you must start at Sault Ste. Marie. Sault Ste. Marie provides year round fun and is famous for the Bon Soo Winter Carnival
