Canadian Boaters Alliance Among Presenters to the Panel
on the Future of the Trent-Severn Watery.
Barrie,
Ontario......... September 12, 2007. "Organized and Passionate"
was the compliment passed on to Ernie Williams and Doug Sinclair after
their presentation to the Panel
on the Future of the Trent-Severn Watery. Williams and Sinclair
were representing the Ontario division of the Canadian Boaters Alliance
at the Barrie meeting on Wednesday September 12. The panel was meeting
with the public about the complex issues, challenges and opportunities
facing the system. Along with about 15 pariticpants the six member board
were presented with written presentations , and heard from private citizens
who recently travelled the Trent Severn Historical Waterway. Comparisons
were made to the Rideau-System and comments were made about better story
telling about our Canadian icons and the the Kirkfield Locks 100 year
anniversary.
All participants seemed to be looking at the same horizon and a firm belief
that this historic river route is a Canadian cultural icon deeply embedded
in the psyche of the boaters, cottagers, and land visitors to the 44 various
locks throughout the 386 km from Georgian Bay to Trenton.
The
major communities involved with the Trent-Severn range from Port Severn,
Port Stanton, through Orillia, Barrie, Keswick, Sutton, Fenelon Falls,
Lindsay, Port Perry, Bobcaygeon, Lakefield, Peterborough, Hastingss Campbellford,
and Trenton. The Trent-Severn basin and watersheds include areas up to
Minden and Haliburton to the north, Bancroft to the East, and South of
Gravenhurst to the West. Accessible lakes throught the system include,
Balsam Lake, Buckhorn Lake, Cameron Lake, Lake Couchiching, Lake Simcoe,
Rice Lake, Sparrow Lake, Lake Scugog, Sturgeon Lake, Stoney Lake, Pigeon
Lake and several additional Kawaratha Lakes.
Sinclair and Williams alos presented possible viable solutions to the
apparant funding problems, management challenges and promotion opportunities
required to take the Trent-Severn into the future.
Panel recommendations will be submitted in December 2007.

Comments: The Trent-Severn Historic Waterway should be one of Ontario's
top 10 destinations to visit. I recently stumbled upon the Kirkfield Locks
on an Ontario road trip on the eve of their 100 year anniversary celebration.
This brought back childhood memories when my parents took us to the Peterborough
Locks while staying at a cottage on Rice Lake. It also reminded me of
how this is still an engineering marvel reflective of the best technology
at the time of its completion. The Photos included were taken at the Kirkfield
Locks on a beautiful summer day in July.
