2006 Ontario Winter Games Begin Wednesday In Collingwood

Games Play An Important Role In Developing Ontario Athletes

TORONTO, March 6 /CNW/ - On Wednesday, over 3,000 athletes will converge on the Town of Collingwood for the 14th Ontario Winter Games, Health Promotion Minister Jim Watson announced today.

The Ontario Winter Games feature 23 sports including speed skating, hockey, alpine skiing, gymnastics, synchronized swimming and figure skating.

The opening ceremonies will be held on March 9 at the Blue Mountain Events Plaza and will include a parade of athletes.

"The Ontario Winter Games celebrate Ontario's athletes," said Minister Watson. "Our athletes are strong and competitive and these Games will allow them to hone their skills for national and international competitions."

The Ontario Winter Games are part of the Ministry of Health Promotion's Ontario Games Program run by the Sport Alliance of Ontario. Other provincial competitions include The Ontario Summer Games, the Ontario Senior Winterfest Games, the Ontario Senior Actifest Games and the Ontario Paralympics
Championships.

The Ministry of Health Promotion was established in June 2005 to improve and deliver programs that contribute to healthy living and wellness in this province. Key priority areas include Ontario's anti-smoking strategy, nutrition, physical activity, injury prevention and mental health.
