WOMEN GET COMFORTABLE IN THE OUTDOORS
On the weekend of June 23 - 25, 2006 on Manitoulin Island, women will
gather to celebrate the great outdoors at the 6th Annual Women's Outdoor
Weekend at Gordon's Park.
The weekend begins on Friday evening with traditional circle dancing and
ice breaker games with local instructor Ciann Strickland of Little Current
who runs similar retreats through her "Circle of Hope" support
group. Beauty of the Pantry with Christine McNaughton of Tehkummah follows
and will teach the women all about simple healthy products from the pantry
that can be used
for every day beauty routines. To wind up the Friday night evening at
9 pm, Jeremie Caza, EcoTourism Coordinator at the park will guide the
women through a touch and try session with tools of the night including
minoculars, binoculars, owl callers, parabolic ears and the park's 8 inch
Dobsonian telescope.
Saturday morning starts with Yoga followed by breakfast with both activities
being prepared and led by Nutritionist Tammy Albers of Little Current.
Registered Massage Therapist Suzanne Norris of Little Curent will do a
sssion on relaxation massage and the benefits of massage to our well being.
Always fun, the murder mystery orienteering teaches the ladies the basics
of reading and using a compass to find their way in the woods. This session
will be led by Jeremie Caza, the park's eco tourism coordinator and nature
guide. Retired MSS Vice Principal, Marca Williamson of Central Manitoulin
will show the ladies how to use various carpenter tools to build a keepsake
chickadee house and Mindemoay resident Sheila McDermid, a certified Donna
Dewbury instructor, will teach them the technique of one stroke painting.
A highlight of the weekend is the Nature Walk with Llama's that is being
hosted by Sue Jeeves of Spring Bay. The ladies will head out into the
bush accommpanied by these stange and loving animals while observing nature
and enjoying some time in the forest. Twilight Tales Theatre, an outdoor
theatre company from Sudbury will be on hand to entertain the ladies with
a play called "This is a Play" followed by a session on Campfire
Improv around the fire.
Sunday morning starts off easy with Pal Dan Gam, a series of breathing
and stretching exercises and breakfast followed by Nature Photography
with professional photographer Mike Hodgson of Tehkummah. The ladies will
learn how to take pictures in nature, how to focus in on the subject matter
and how to create beautiful and striking background shots. A friendly
competitive mini putt challenge and a delightful Stone Soup luncheon winds
things up at around noon on Sunday morning.
