Be a Falconer For A Day—Become A Falconry Apprentice!

Wye Marsh Be A Falconer for A DayMidland, Ontario, Canada…Friday, January 05, 2007. A one-day introductory falconry workshop will take place on Saturday January 13, 2007 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Participants will develop a better understanding of behaviours, habitat, life cycle and the basics of falconry along with the exciting experience of flying and landing birds of prey. The falconry workshop will be conducted by Master Falconer, Matt Lieberknecht from the Central Ontario School of Falconry (with (the assistance of Wye Marsh staff). Cost of the full- day workshop, including lunch, is $100.

Liberknecht says, “The main objective of the workshop is provide an overview of falconry for those who think they may be interested in pursuing this 3,000-year-old sport.”

Lieberknecht apprenticed under one of Europe's most successful breeders and respected Falconers. After working full-time for almost a decade, Lieberknecht decided to leave West Germany to help promote and develop the sport of falconry in Canada.

Topics that will be discussed are: history of falconry, how to work with birds of prey equipment, health and food requirements, and what requirements are involved in completing falconry apprenticeship and acquiring a falconry license.

The beginning falconer will be given an overview of:

  • Identification of hawks, falcons and eagles and their differentiating traits, habitats and hunting styles.
  • Use and maintenance of falconry equipment.
  • Handling various hawks, falcons and eagles.
  • General management of raptor including housing, health care and feeding.
  • The complete process of conditioning, training and free flying a bird for falconry purposes.
  • Field training
  • Upon completion of the workshop, student will have enough basic knowledge and can decide if they are interested in entering the exciting world of falconry.

A full falconry course is available at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre for those wanting to pursue their falconry license.
