News from Friends of Algonquin (Algonquin Park )
This spring was the earliest in the last 50 years, and perhaps ever, in
Algonquin Park. The first spring wildflowers typically come into bloom
in mid to late April, but the first flowers were reported on April 4 this
year. Now is the time to see Algonquin’s hardwood forest wildflowers in
full bloom. Before the leaves on Sugar Maples, Beech and Yellow Birch
are fully out by mid to late May, sunlight reaches the forest floor and
our early spring plants come into flower. Trout Lily, Red Trillium, and
Dutchman’s-breeches are blooming. These plants rush to produce their beautiful
flowers before the dense forest canopy plunges the hardwood forest into
deep shade. See more about Algonquin Ontario
