Summer vacations in Ontario have been a recreation necessity for almost 400 years. Samuel de Champlain decided to stay in Georgian Bay during the summer of 1615, as he liked the Sweet Water Sea, later named Georgian Bay. This was his time to rest, and relax after his travels from the French River area. As Ontario developed and settlers moved both west from the Ottawa Valley area, and North from Toronto, many permanent summer cottages were built. Eventually resorts and other accommodation followed. The summer vacation traditions continue today with many “summer only” tourist type accommodation in the form of bungalows, cabins, full service family resorts, fishing resorts, cottage-resorts, and hostels.
