Bagattaway Lacrosse Festival
June 24 - June 25
First played by Indigenous People as a test of physical fitness and even as a means to settle disputes, lacrosse has a strong historic connection to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons. “Bagattaway”, meaning “lacrosse” in Ojibway was aptly chosen as the festival moniker. Undoubtedly, the highlight of this fast-paced, family event will be demonstrations by National Lacrosse League (NLL) players, Stephan Leblanc and Dhane Smith. Leblanc currently plays for the Toronto Rock and was a gold medal winner at the 2015 World Indoor Championship in Syracuse. In 2016, Dhane Smith set the single season NLL goals record. Visitors will be invited to test their skills against these seasoned professionals and also gauge their own ability with a speed shot radar gun.
The two day event will also include presentations about the history of Canada’s national summer sport. Famed maker of wooden lacrosse sticks, Alf Jacques, will be on hand to discuss the art of stick making. Jacques is a member of Onondaga, one of the Iroquois nations. To his people, lacrosse is sacred and a gift which they say is from the Creator. With over half of century of experience under his belt, Jacques will explain the process of crafting a lacrosse stick which involves about two dozen steps spanning at least eight months.
The Bagattaway Lacrosse Festival will run on Friday July 1st and Saturday July 2nd from 11am to 4pm with admission fees at $12.00 per adult, $10.50 per student and $9.25 for youth between the ages of 6 to 12 years. For more information, please contact Sainte-Marie among the Hurons at (705) 526-7838.
