Learn how to identify and when to harvest the choicest parts of wild edibles. Returning to Windfall Food Forest we’ll preserve a part of our harvest drawing on the ancient art of fermentation. Then we’ll gather around the long trestle table nestled among the pines overlooking the lake to savour some local and wild fare.
Walk into Winter
Take a walk on the wild side. Start your day with an introduction to snowshoes – history, types, techniques, and tips. After some practice you will head out on a wilderness walk with a winter travel expoert to discover the ecology of winter and the finer points of winter travel and survival. You will also enjoy some good stories, warm hospitality, and a tasty bush lunch prepared over a campfire.
Sip, Swill, and Savour
Tingle your taste buds on this guided tour of the craft breweries and winery located along Highway 118 between Haliburton and Carnarvon. An entertaining guide will be your designated driver as you step behind the scenes to meet the beer and wine places and personalities of the Haliburton Highlands. You will enjoy great tastes, the stories, and some special surprises.
Tastes of Haliburton
Start your day with an informative wild edibles hike in the company of a knowledgeable local guide, moving on to the Wintergreen Barn where you will learn to make your own Haliburton Tortiere or Maple Syrup Pie. Just up the road we will visit a family run organic farm, for four seasons of flavour; followed by a behind the scenes tour of Moon Shadows Estate Winery, a unique winemaker who uses maple syrup and fruit to produce some incredibly tasty wine. Cap off the day with an optional fine dining experience, Haliburton-style!
Explore the back roads of the Haliburton Highlands. This tour will take you through forests, farm and hamlet, and along the shores of rivers, lakes, and wetlands. You will discover the rich and diverse natural and cultural heritage of the Highlands.
Fur & Flintlock
Discover the fascinating world of Canada’s and Haliburton County’s oldest industry – the fur trade. On snowshoes, you will hear stories of the fur trade as it was conducted in the late 18th century, and observe and handle reproduction trade goods.

Are you ready for the sweetest showdown of the year? Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival and Contest is the province’s premier event celebrating everyone’s favourite ooey-gooey pastry—the butter tart!
Each year tens of thousands of visitors flock to Midland, Ontario to taste the best of the best butter tarts in the province. Our butter tart contest draws professional and home bakers from all over the province to compete for the title ‘Best Butter Tart in Ontario’. Over the years, audiences have come to love watching the butter tart contest, tasting along with our panel of judges so they too can be a part of the experience.
Along with our contest comes a day of sweet activities. Lots of fantastic artisan vendors and live entertainment fill the day, making it a great experience for festival visitors. Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival is committed to showing our attendees a good time, and inviting visitors to experience all of the great attractions our region has to offer.

Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh is home to Muskoka Lakes Winery, serving wines crafted from local fruit native to Muskoka.
Our winery is open daily, year round and the Bog to Bottle Discovery experience is offered every day at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. McLean Berry Farm is a family owned and operated strawberry and vegetable farm located in the heart of the Kawartha Lakes Area in south-eastern Ontario. Visitors are welcome to visit the farms and take part in the delicious Ontario tradition of seasonal berry picking (and eating!).
