Ontario Hiking Getaways

Hiking north of Toronto is a weekend adventure for many Ontario outdoor enthusiasts. Most resort destinations (northofToronto) will have hiking trails nearby, and individual accommodation properties will have trails on-site, or nearby provincial and national parks where hiking is available. Year round hiking can offers the potential to see wildlife. Seasoned hikers may want to try a portage adventure involving canoes and hiking taking visitors deep into remote and wilderness areas. See canoe getaways and the Algonquin area.

Please note all prices for packages, getaways, room rates and activities are subject to change and may not be available at the time of booking. Come back to our site often for up-to-date packages for specific time periods.

Barry’s Bay Cottages Starburst icon representing membership level: Gold+

Barry's Bay Cottages

Closer to home, we have a short nature trail that makes a nice place to stretch your legs. In winter, why not bring along the snowshoes or we have some for rent. If you are looking for longer trail systems to hike, bike, snowshoe or simply explore there are several in the area. Trail runners and mountain bikers can explore the B102 off Otter Lake Lane or even the trails across from civic address 554 on Arbor Vitae Road.

Further afield, the newly established Spectacle Lake, Bear and Brunettes Mountain Trail system is found 13 km west of the resort off of Highway 60. Our favourite is the short trek up Bear Mountain that leads to a great vantage point and a series of trails at the north end of nearby Bark Lake. The Thomas P Murray Recreation Trails south of Barry’s Bay on Highway 62 are equally impressive. Of course, many prefer to explore nearby Algonquin Provincial Park where several trails are found along Highway 60.

The Spirit of Tom Thomson Package
September 8-10, 2017 | From $279*/person per night

A weekend designed to walk – and paint – in the footsteps of legendary artist, Tom Thomson, whose mysterious death in Algonquin has intrigued both art and wilderness lovers for 100 years. Presented by Eclipse Art Gallery and Deerhurst Resort, guests on this special weekend will create their own replica Tom Thomson painting and experience his cherished Canoe Lake in Algonquin Park with artist, Janine Marson, who spent a year retracing his steps as she created 100 on location paintings in the same places that Thomson did. Unlike Thomson, however, guests will enjoy all the comforts and cuisine of Deerhurst Resort, just minutes from Algonquin Park and the charming town of Huntsville, which boasts strong ties to Thomson, and where guests will tour of the Group of Seven outdoor mural gallery, and add their own brushstrokes to a new mural being created during the town’s Tom Thomson 100 celebrations.

Paddle & Hike Muskoka Ultimate Package
5 km hike, 10km paddle, 6 hours
$100 per person, $55 per child (ages 3-12)
One of our favourite trips in the Muskoka paddling adventures! Why? Well, not only is this hike portion of the trip a site for sights, its also a great view of the Muskoka waterways. Paddle down stream and out into Lake Muskoka while learning a bit of history about the area. When we stop for lunch its at a park that has BBQ’s powered by fire, so the hot lunch is always de-lish. From our lunch spot is also the start of a trail that is not known to many people in the area, which means its usually a site for lots of animal traffic. We have seen barred owls, small woodland craeatures, woodpeckers, oh and did we mention its a protected site for deer and rabbits? So lots of these guys are seen as well. After the hike, we grad a snack and then hop back in our boats.
